RTD (Resistance Temperature Detectors)
The use of RTD/PT100 is to measure temperatures that require improved accuracy over what a thermocouple could offer. Typically connected to temperature controllers, they transmitters with 2 or 3 wires options. The third wire reduces the error from the leads and provides higher accuracy.
Advantages
- More accurate than thermocouples
- Stability
- More linear than thermocouples
Disadvantages
- Power supply required
- Higher costs than thermocouples
- Low resistance value
- Self-heating
